Keep Your Child Engaged During the Summer!
Summer is a great opportunity for learning! You can get outside and explore the world around you, read great books that will take you to different places, and have many conversations with your children about the things they see. Keeping children’s brains and bodies engaged during the summer is easier than you think. Here are a few activities you can do that are fun and full of learning!
Shape Recognition Game
You will need:
- Tape (masking or painter’s) or if you are outdoors, sidewalk chalk
- Paint
- The floor or sidewalk/driveway/playground!
Directions:
-
- You can either draw shapes on the paper or cut them out. Outline several large shapes on the floor using your painter’s tape or the masking tape; making them big enough for the kids to jump inside!
- Place down the tape shapes for the 5 basic shapes – rectangle, square, triangle, circle, and oval. The circles and ovals are a bit trickier to do with tape but bend it as best as you can!
- You can do so many things with this game- have your child match the paper shape to the tape shape or have your child walk, jump, or hop to each shape on the floor and say out loud which shape it is. For extra exercise, you can also hold up a shape card and your children can run to the matching shape!

Another great activity of course is reading, particularly on a hot day when you are trying to stay cool! Books are a great way to get your build vocabulary and understanding. Every time you read together you are helping prepare your child for school success. Here are a few great summer book options to keep your little ones entertained and engaged!
