Shape Fans
This week we will focus on building early cognitive (brain) development through shape and color recognition using a fun, homemade art activity.
You will need:
Cardboard (Tip: You can use old cereal or shoe boxes), Colored Construction paper, Safety Scissors, Glue or Tape
Directions:
- Cut out different shapes, such as circles, squares, rectangles, diamonds, and triangles from pieces of cardboard.
- Cut out matching shapes from different colored construction paper (Tip: Help your child practice tracing the shapes before you cut them).
- Match the cardboard shape with the construction paper shape, and glue or tape them together (Tip: Turn this step into a fun shape-matching game).
- Glue or tape a Popsicle stick to the back of the cardboard for a handle.
School Readiness Tips:
- Talk about the colors. What color is this? Do you want to take a walk and find things outside that are green?
- Introduce and practice shapes. What shape is this fan? What else in this room is a square? Can you draw a circle?
- Decorate your fans. Do you want to personalize your fan? Should mommy color a fan also? Tip: Scribbling is the precursor to writing, so give your child plenty of opportunities to scribble.
- Discuss physical feelings. Are you hot? How can you cool down? Why do you think you feel so hot? When do you feel cold?
