Be Earthy this Earth Day!

Earth Day, April 22nd, celebrates our Earth and how important it is to us. Earth Day originated in the 1970s when environmental issues were first coming to the forefront as issues that needed to be addressed. This day provides an opportunity to think about what we can do to keep the Earth healthy, and how we can help the environment and teach our children new things at the same time!

Talk with your children about why it is important to take care of the environment. Discuss with them all the things the Earth provides for us – water, air, food. With your children, identify ways that your family can be more environmentally friendly, such as recycling together or turning off the water while brushing your teeth at bedtime.

Here are some books you and your children can read together in celebration of Earth Day and making the world a cleaner, healthier place!

You will need:

  • One used recyclable water (or other plastic) bottle
  • Scissors or Exacto (craft) knife
  • Glue
  • Paint and paint brush
  • Paper
  • Green Marker

Directions:

    1. Cut the bottle down the middle, from the bottom vertically.
    2. Cut slits up each side of the bottle all the way to the cap.
(Parents should do the above two steps themselves)
    3. Press bottle from the cap on the table so it flattens out (see picture).
    4. Paint the “petals” of the flower any colors/patterns you like.
    5. Paint cap as the center of the petals.
    6. Glue petals onto paper.
    7. Draw stem and leaf of the flower.
