Event Overview
How can we have conversations with our children about diversity and inclusion, early and often through math books and play? Why is Math Literacy especially important in children’s literature and school readiness? How can the intersection of early math and early literacy be joyful and playful for both children and adults?
For over 50 years, ParentChild+ has been working to strengthen inclusivity and diversity by partnering with parents to build school readiness supports in the homes of young children and their families. By committing to provide all families with reading and play materials that are diverse, inclusive, and culturally relevant, we are prioritizing helping children and families to be rooted in their own identities and develop a strong sense of self and understanding of others.
We invite you to this new episode ParentChild+’s virtual series Windows, Mirrors, & Doors, where children’s book authors and advocates will lead us in a compelling discussion on math access and inspiration in children’s literature. The discussion will focus on math literacy and will shine a light on the impact that math representation has on the well-being and social-emotional development of children. It will highlight the importance of all children and families learning about math in a joyful, playful, and meaningful way, and making it a part of their early learning experiences.
At ParentChild+, we believe representation and book selection can be a powerful step toward building a stronger, more equitable world.
This event is co-hosted with our partners at the Mathical Book Prize, an annual award for fiction and nonfiction books that inspire children of all ages to see math in the world around them. Scroll down to learn more or visit their website by clicking here.

Co-hosted by the Mathical Book Prize
The Mathical Book Prize is an annual award for fiction and nonfiction books that inspire children of all ages to see math in the world around them.
The Mathical Book Prize recognizes math-inspiring literature for kids ages 2-18. Prize-winning books are selected by a committee of teachers, librarians, mathematicians, and others.
Each year’s selections join a growing list of stories ranging from picture books and graphic novels to chapter books and young adult literature.
The Mathical Book Prize is awarded by the Simons Laufer Mathematical Institute (SLMath), in cooperation with the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS). The award is presented in partnership with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), in coordination with the Children's Book Council.
