Flag Day
June 14 is Flag Day! Talk with your children about how today is the day when Congress adopted the “Stars and Stripes” as the flag of the United States. Today is the perfect opportunity to talk about the colors, shapes, and symbolism of the flag. It is also a great time to look at other flags, for example, the flags of your state or the flags of the countries your family comes from. Explain how each flag has its own unique shapes, colors, and history.
There are many flag-related books and activities you and your child can enjoy together.
Pom-pom Flag
You Will Need:
• White paper
• Red, white, and blue paint
• 3 paintbrushes or 3 clothespins with 3 pom poms or cotton balls
Directions:
1. Start by having your child pinch the pom-poms/cotton balls into the clothespins.
2. Dip one clothespin into the blue paint and have them stamp the blue portion of the flag.
3. While the blue part dries, repeat the previous step, but this time use the red paint to stamp the stripes.
4. Once the blue part dries, use the white paint to stamp the “stars”.
Before or after this activity, read some great books about the Flag!
