Groundhog Egg Carton Project
February 2nd is Groundhog Day! Explain the day by reading great Groundhog Day themed books with your children such as the ones below, having conversations with your child as to what it means if the groundhog sees its shadow or not, and ask your child if he or she wants six more weeks of winter. Make sure to do a great art project today as well, such as this Groundhog egg carton project!
Throughout the entire activity, talk about what you’re doing. Laugh over the googly eyes, admire how cute groundhogs are, and just keep talking!
You will need:
- Egg carton
- Brown paint
- Brown or black pom poms. If not easily accessible, use crumpled tissue paper.
- Glue
- Tape
- Googly eyes (optional)
Directions:
- Cut out the egg carton into two portions, one for the top, and one for the bottom.
- Have your kids paint these egg cartons brown.
- When the paint is dry, put some glue on the inside of one of the cups and glue brown pom poms inside. (If you have small pom poms, you may want to smash several together to make him big enough to fill the cup bottom. Let your kids add eyes to him if they would like.
- Use silk grass to create ‘grass’ marks on the bottom egg carton.
- Tape the two egg cartons from top to the bottom and your kids will have a groundhog project–they actually can open and close!
This project is a great opportunity for you and your kids to enjoy a wonderful moment. Let’s make this Groundhog Day a little bit different and offer your kids a sensory experience.
