Examining the Feasibility of Using Home Visiting Models to Support Home-Based Child Care Providers, Child Trends, September 2019
Please read this terrific report from Child Trends on why Family Child Care providers not only need professional development supports that are designed specifically for them but deserve an approach that celebrates and acknowledges the unique and extraordinary benefit they provide to the communities in which they work. This report provides critical information on how home visiting models can be used to deliver unique support for quality practices in Family Child Care, and highlights ParentChild+’s work in this area.
“I believe this just supports not only what we do but the fact that family child care is isolating in terms of professional development because most are run and operated by a single person. They are tired at the end of the day, so they don’t seek out evening professional development unless it’s required. Bringing the program to them just makes sense not just from the PD lens, but also from a practical lens because it allows them to practice what has been modeled. You know my heart is with family child care and seeing it from their perspective I feel it’s a win-win. The light touch of ParentChild+ also helps them feel like they are part of the process, not that someone is coming in critiquing everything they do. Centering on engagement really helps the providers understand the importance of their interactions and creates an atmosphere of relax and talk vs I have to fulfill these ‘requirements.'” – Monica Allison, West Philadelphia Site Coordinator and former Family Child Care provider
