Paper Plate Sunflower
Spring is here! Celebrate the arrival of a new season by talking with your child the changes that occur during the springtime. Ask them what they like about the spring or what they look forward to doing in the warmer weather. Do a fun art activity together to celebrate the start of spring, like this paper plate sunflower project!
While you’re doing this project, be sure to talk about what you are doing with your child. For instance, you can talk about the colors of the sunflower and compare them to other colorful flowers they may have seen in pictures or outside.
You Will Need:
- Paper plate
- Yellow and green paint
- Sunflower seeds or tea leaves. If unavailable, use a brown marker or crayon to draw them.
- A Stick or a strong piece of cardboard
- Scissors
- Paintbrush
- Glue
Directions:
- Start by painting (or coloring) the paper plate yellow. Once the paint is dry, you can use a circular object to trace a circle in the middle of the plate.
- Using the scissors, cut from the edges of the plate to the circle to make petals.
- Gently fold the petals up slightly to separate them.
- Glue (or draw) whatever you are using for your seeds into the circle in the middle.
- Make the stalk by painting (or coloring) a stick or strip of strong cardboard green and attaching it to the back of the plate.
This project is a wonderful opportunity for you and your child to talk about spring and all the things that grow at this time of year, a great hands-on experience to kick off the season!
