Summer Is Here!
Summer is finally here, the weather is getting warmer, the school year is winding down, and now is a great time to plan some fun literacy activities for your family.
Spend time this summer reading favorite books with your children. We have plenty on our website if you need inspiration. Then take your reading together fun one step further by creating a reading worm full of fun literacy-connected activities! Your reading worm can include a different activity for each book you and your child read together, like acting out the book, drawing a picture of your favorite part of the book, finding another book by the same author to read, singing a song together that connects to the book, etc. The possibilities are endless!
You Will Need:
• Construction paper of colors of your choice
• Something circular to trace, such as a cup
• A pencil
• Scissors
• Glue or tape
• Crayons or markers
• Large piece of paper
Directions:
1. Using a circular object, trace circles on several different pieces of colored paper. Suggestion: start with 15 circles, you can make more circles later if you and your child have more ideas to write down.
2. Using crayons or markers have your child decorate the worm’s face and the circles.
3. Write your literacy activity ideas on the back of each circle.
4. Using glue or tape, tape the face of the worm on an edge of the piece of paper, this will be the “starting point.”
5. Every time you read a new book together, pick out one of the circles and do the activity together. Each time you do an activity, attach the circle to the head of the worm and watch it grow as the summer goes on!
