Dr. James A. Shiminski Receives the 2010 Soaring to Success Award
Pittsfield, MA – Dr. James A. Shiminski, Former Title I Director of the Pittsfield Public Schools, was honored for his commitment to expanding The Parent-Child Home Program with the 2010 Soaring to Success Award. The award was presented to Dr. Shiminski on December 9, 2010 at a ceremony at the State House in Boston.
This award is given annually to individuals who have made significant contributions to advancing The Parent-Child Home Program in Massachusetts. This year Dr. Shiminski was honored for his devoted work on behalf of the children and families of Pittsfield and the entire state. As Title I Director of the Pittsfield Public Schools, Dr. Shiminski initiated research demonstrating the effectiveness of The Parent-Child Home Program, following preschool participants through high school graduation. He then helped lead the effort to obtain state funding for the Program in 2000, and has worked for the past decade to sustain and expand that funding. Although he is now retired, Dr. Shiminski continues to work on behalf of the families of Pittsfield and Massachusetts, serving on The Parent- Child Home Program-Child Home Program’s MA Advisory Council and working with the homeless in Pittsfield.
The presentation of the award took place at the Massachusetts State House on December 9th, 2010 as part of the 2010meeting. Sally Douglas, Assistant Superintendent of the Pittsfield Public Schools, and James M. Ruberto, Mayor of Pittsfield, both spoke at the presentation ceremony. Representatives of State Senator Benjamin Downing and State Representative Smitty Pignatelli also participated in the advisory council event.
