PCHP’s Stoughton, MA Site Hosts a Literacy Night!
Mindful that “children are made readers on the laps of their parents” Stoughton Parent-Child Home Program recently hosted a family literacy night.
Parents and pajama-clad children cuddled on blankets while authors Carolyn-Curtis-Mahoney (author of I Took the Moon for a Walk) and Sarah Marwil Lamstein (author of Big Night for Salamanders) read their books, drawing families into the magic of stories.
Both authors expanded on their stories for their audience, making them come alive for their young listeners. After Carolyn read her story, she used puppets, singing, and a discussion about the interaction between author and illustrator to expand on the power of words. Sarah used a multi-media presentation to capture the drama of a family’s involvement in the natural world.
Families were able to enter a free raffle for one of the two book-themed baskets provided by Stoughton PCHP. As a farewell gift, each family got to choose an autographed copy of one of the author’s books to take home.
On the event evaluation form one family said it was “interactive and fun for all ages”, another said, “Great stories and the authors were great!” Perhaps our favorite comment was, “The event encourages reading.”
