Parent-Child Home Program Receives Grant for New York City Program Expansion from the Pinkerton Foundation

We are pleased to announce that The Pinkerton Foundation has awarded The Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP) a two-year $570,000 grant to support its New York City Expansion Project. The grant will enable the Program to open new sites on the Lower East Side with The Educational Alliance and in Fort Greene, Brooklyn with University Settlement, and to expand its work in the Bronx with its partner agency, Leake & Watts.
This generous grant, PCHP’s first from The Pinkerton Foundation, will allow PCHP to continue to increase the number of families being served in New York City over the next two years. The funding will be used to seed the two new NYC sites, expand the Program’s presence in the Bronx, and enhance the support PCHP’s New York regional staff is able to provide to all Program partner agencies in New York City to ensure high quality early literacy and school readiness services for families challenged by poverty, limited education, and language and literacy barriers.
Christopher Bell, Senior Program Officer at Pinkerton, noted that “PCHP’s home visiting program has a well-documented history of placing trained paraprofessionals in the homes of low-income families to assist parents and other caregivers in creating literacy-rich home environments. PCHP’s home visitors model behaviors that stimulate parent-child interaction, develop language and literacy skills in children ages 2-4, and prepare them to be school-ready. The Pinkerton Foundation is proud to support the expansion of the nationally-recognized Parent-Child Home Program in New York City.”
The Parent-Child Home Program’s New York City expansion project is part of a larger national expansion project focused on increasing the number of families reached by the Program annually. This year PCHP provided over 300,000 home visits through partner agencies serving over 300 communities in 14 states, Canada, Ireland, and Bermuda. By 2014 its goal is to be providing over 450,000 home visits annually and distributing 230,000 books and educational toys to children who have none.
The Parent-Child Home Program is an evidence-based, research-validated early literacy, parenting, and school readiness program. PCHP’s National Center strives to ensure that families challenged by poverty, lack of educational opportunities, and language and literacy barriers have access to the Program’s intensive home visiting services.
