HarperCollins Publishers to be Honored for its Commitment to Children’s Literacy Across the Nation
NEW YORK September 9, 2015 –The Parent-Child Home Program (“PCHP”), the leading early childhood literacy organization that promotes active parental involvement in early literacy and language development to ensure school readiness, today announced that the organization will commemorate its 50th anniversary by hosting a gala in New York City on Friday, November 13, 2015 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. For the past 50 years, PCHP has provided low-income families with the necessary skills and tools to ensure their children reach their greatest potential in school and in life. At the gala, Suzanne Murphy, President and Publisher of HarperCollins Children’s Books will be accepting an award on the company’s behalf for their generous support and commitment to early childhood literacy across the nation.
“We are so excited to celebrate 50 years of serving parents and caregivers from underserved communities across the country with the tools and resources they need to help their children be better prepared for pre-school and reach their full potential in reading and writing, said Sarah Walzer, Chief Executive Officer of The Parent-Child Home Program. “We are very grateful to HarperCollins Children’s Books for their generous support and long-term commitment to our mission and to early childhood literacy. The books HarperCollins publishes are some of the very best of our Program’s recommended reading for children.”
PCHP’s 50th anniversary gala will feature special guests and speakers including local New York City-ABC News anchor, Bill Ritter. The organization will recognize long-term funders of the Program and participants and staff members who contributed to PCHP’s success over the last 50 years. PCHP will also debut a new film showcasing the immediate and long-term effects the program has on families across the nation. All the funds raised for the gala will go towards program expansion to support the success of the next 50 years.
As a further testament to their commitment to literacy, HarperCollins Publishers has agreed to donate children’s and adult books to the event gift bags and silent auction.
“The Parent-Child Home Program’s research and evidence-based methodologies have helped ensure that our youngest and most vulnerable children enter school ready to succeed in pre-K and beyond,” said Suzanne Murphy, President and Publisher of HarperCollins Children’s Books. “Every child should have the same chances to succeed in school, and HarperCollins Children’s Books is proud to share in PCHP’s mission by providing children with the appropriate books to help them develop the literacy skills they need to succeed in school. We are truly humbled to be honored by this organization.”

About Parent Child Home Program
The Parent-Child Home Program’s (PCHP) nationwide network of program sites provides under-resourced families with the necessary tools to ensure their children achieve their greatest potential in school and in life. Since 1965, PCHP has been assisting underserved communities in replicating and expanding this proven school readiness program that builds early parent-child verbal interaction and learning at home. Through twice-weekly visits by highly trained community-based Early Learning Specialists, PCHP provides families the skills, materials (books and educational toys), and support to help parents engage and teach their children. Almost 50 years of research shows that the Program effectively increases school readiness, decreases the need for special education services before grade 3 by 50%, and increases participants’ high school graduation rates by over 30% to the same level as their middle income peers.
