PCHP Philadelphia Celebrates Their First Year of PCHP!
On October 5th the Parent-Child Home Program in Philadelphia celebrated its first year in the city at the historic Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse in North Philadelphia. PCHP families from North and South/Southwest Philadelphia had a fantastic time playing at the playground especially on Smith’s giant wooden slide, as well as enjoying food truck treats from Brotherly Grub. Partners, funders, PCHP Advisory Council members, and elected officials also joined in the festivities.
PCHP was pleased to honor State Representative Donna Bullock as the 2017 Philadelphia PCHP Champion for her support of the Program. During the first year of PCHP in Philadelphia, State Rep. Bullock supported PCHP by joining the Advisory Council, making sure PCHP was represented at various community meetings in North Philadelphia, and introducing the Program to trusted individuals and organizations that could help spread the word about PCHP. Additionally, Rep. Bullock helped the Program as we advocated for state funding in Harrisburg. Her support was crucial in PCHP’s first year in Philadelphia.
Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse also announced a new partnership with PCHP through the Informal Learning Initiative sponsored by the William Penn Foundation. The Informal Learning Initiative will allow PCHP families in North Philadelphia to come to Smith Playground to enjoy monthly early literacy activities. It is part of a larger initiative that brings early learning programming directly to families in ways that not only engage children, but also involve adults as active participants by building their skills to support language and literacy learning in non-traditional environments. PCHP is truly excited to partner with Smith on this important initiative. PCHP was also happy to announce its expansion into the West Philadelphia Promise Neighborhood this fall in partnership with Drexel University.
At the end of the celebration, PCHP families enjoyed cupcakes from Oteri’s and received a certificate, book, and learning kit in recognition of their participation in PCHP’s inaugural year in Philadelphia. It was a wonderful event and a true reflection of the great relationships that PCHP Site Coordinators and Early Learning Specialists have developed with families and children in North and South/Southwest Philadelphia. The magic that is PCHP was felt by all who attended! We can’t wait to celebrate the second year of the Program and our first Philadelphia graduating class in 2018!
